The other day I heard a fascinating term. The conversation was referencing a Green-collar worker. For those of you who cannot conceptualize its meaning, it is in reference to individuals working in the environmentally friendly arena, better-known-as these days as the Green industry.
This industry is comprised of both White-collar and Blue-collar workers, which are respectfully more familiar terms for a salaried professional and a working class individual who performs manual labor and earns an hourly wage.
I did some research and see that this term started in the 70's, but I have a feeling we'll be hearing more of this. Examples of individuals would span from a financier of Green technology, an installer of Green technology such as solar panels, and a designer of more environmentally friendly technology such as Green cars.
So it seems that this term has moved away from job function and more towards industry association. If that is the case then I would have suggested Cyber-collar workers, for those working in the network technology industry. However, as I was conducting research, it seems that Grey-collar is the classification for such individuals.
So maybe I can make a suggestion for an industry that is poised to grow as rapidly as the green revolutions has in the past couple of years. I would like to propose Galaxy-collar worker, referring to those in the ever-growing space and aero industries. And if we do get to Mars and start to populate it, then I would like to call those working there Red-collar workers.
Enjoy the summer, as this no-collar worker is going to the beach.
